Corey’s 2022 Year End Update

Wow, 2022 has been a whirlwind of a year. For the first time ever, we released 2 games in the same year (Voices in My Head and 3000 Scoundrels). This was a huge endeavor, especially for a small one-man studio. I am super proud of both games; especially how drastically different they are from each other. Their uniqueness really helped establish what it means to be an Unexpected Game.

Over the summer I visited Paris for the first time ever, came home with Covid, then recovered just in time to go to GenCon! I have attended nearly every GenCon from 2008-2018, so it was great to be back and see how much things have changed. This was the first time Unexpected Games attended a game convention, and it was also the first time players got to play 3000 Scoundrels! I really enjoyed seeing so many faces and playing games with fans. It was great.

September was a big milestone for us as we finally hired our second employee: Josh! He’s come on board as head of communications and operations, and he’s doing a great job managing our social media, marketing, and helping me with development. He is the guiding force behind some of our new initiatives like our Sixty Second Ciphers and our quarterly newsletter. The first newsletter was great, and he even twisted my arm into making a list of my top 20 games of all time.

In December, we sent our 4th product to the printer! Well, technically we sent it to the production team who will send it for localization first, but it is out of my hands and on its way to becoming reality. This item is a bit smaller than our previous games, and it is something we have not done yet as a studio. We’ll unveil it next summer and hopefully release it in the fall.

Now, as the year comes to a close, I’m turning my eyes to the future. I’ve got some ambitious plans for the next few years, including one game that is so big that it won’t come out until 2026. I made a prototype for that earlier in the year and it is mind-blowing.

My last task this week is to finish building a prototype for a crazy-exciting 2024 release. I really think it is what fans want, and I’ll be spending the majority of 2023 making this game a reality.

I look forward to a long holiday break full of family, friends, and lazy mornings.

I hope that 2022 was good to you, and that you enjoy the end of the year. Thank you for your support!
